Making Tax Digital will be upon us soon enough (April 2019).
HMRC are to run pilots for their new digital processes, they need the support of businesses to test and help shape the system before it is rolled out more widely. If selected for the pilot, businesses will submit their returns using the new digital process, with HMRC monitoring progress of the system and process. The requirement is to simply submit the returns using the new system.
By being part of the trial your business will be ahead of other businesses who will have to adopt the new system April 2019. HMRC will offer support and assistance with your software and you also get to feedback to HMRC for potential improvements or issues ahead of the April 2019 launch date.
HMRC state they are only interested in the submission of VAT return process, there are no additional compliance checks. The same checks of VAT returns will be carried out as normal. This might be an opportunity for your business to get ahead of the game.
Just to remind what Making Tax Digital is all about. VAT registered businesses with a turnover above the VAT threshold will be obliged to maintain their business records digitally and submit their VAT Return through a new system. It will be from any VAT return with an accounting period that starts on or after 1st April 2019
If interested in taking part in the trials, then please contact me in the first instance and we can then refer you onto the appropriate person at the Making Tax Digital Team at HMRC. HMRC will check with you what software you use, and will know when it will be ready, so you won’t be asked to join before then.
