Becoming a Partner

From a young age I always enjoyed working with numbers, which was not only highlighted through my school work but also by helping my mum with the record keeping for our family farm.

Through completing 2 weeks work experience in the Tax office in Launceston, a week’s work experience in the Finance department of a local factory and a further week in a local accountants, I knew that I definitely wanted to pursue a career in accountancy. I was passionate about engaging with clients and supporting them through their journey.

Here is a snap shot of my journey

After leaving school many years ago, I completed a GNVQ in Business studies in which I achieved a Distinction and Business Student of the year award. On leaving college, I found an employer who would employ me as an apprentice. They supported me through my Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) studies. After completing my AAT qualification, I didn’t want to stop there. I carried on to obtain the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants qualification.

What next?

I hoped that my employment would progress with my studies, but unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. I felt that I wasn’t developing as a professional whereby I could use all that studying and apply it to the work I was doing. On a mission, I decided to look for a firm that would.

This leap gave me more experience, and I was thriving in my new position. Haines Watts acquired the firm I was working with, and I could see further limitless opportunities ahead of me. Vince still reminds me on occasion, that it felt that I was interviewing them to see if they were a fit for me, rather than the other way round. I had a long list of questions for a firm that I had never even heard of before then.

Growth and Opportunity

Since joining Haines Watts back in April 2016, I have maximised every opportunity. I have progressed through the business from a senior accounts technician, to a senior manager, to an associate partner and now to a partner. I am not going to lie it has been tough at times, but it has also been a pleasure to work with the team and the existing partners. It is hard to believe the growth and opportunity I have been shown in just a short space of time!

The journey doesn’t stop there. As a partner you are learning every day, from legislative or software changes, to working with our clients and developing our team. We are all running our own business so we are on the same journey as our clients…there’s never a dull moment, and I am looking to the future with excitement!
