Retailers poised for ’Mega Monday’
Experts are predicting a surge in online sales today as shoppers browse the internet in search of festive gifts.

‘Mega Monday’ is expected to be the year’s busiest day for internet shopping, with consumers turning to their PCs as the countdown to Christmas begins.

For the past two years the Monday closest to the start of December has seen a peak in online sales because shoppers believe their goods will arrive in good time.

Visa Europe anticipates that today’s internet sales will reach a record 2.4 million – up by 25% on last year. The firm expects to handle some 1,600 transactions a minute, with more than £175m likely to be spent.

The peak time for trading is likely to be between the hour of 1pm and 2pm and then again at 7pm.

Dr Steve Perry, Commercial Director at Visa Europe, said: ‘In the past year, we’ve seen a continued increase in online spend on Visa cards, despite the recession. In fact on 2 November 2009, we surpassed our busiest days for spend in 2008 in the UK.’

Clothing and books are the most popular purchases made over the internet, with 41% of shoppers buying these items from virtual stores.
